Riding the SR 40 West to the Ocala National Forest
SR 40 West to the Ocala National Forest: a 44-mile mixed-road ride from Granada Blvd at US 1, Ormond Beach to Juniper Springs Recreation Area, Ocala National Forest. Plan on about 1 hr 10 min of riding, plus stops.
Take Granada Boulevard, which is SR 40, west out of Ormond Beach, across I-95 and through the Tomoka Wildlife Management Area. The road passes near De Leon Springs and runs through Barberville, where it meets US 17, then crosses the St. Johns River on the Astor Bridge. West of Astor, SR 40 cuts through the Ocala National Forest, the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River.
Juniper Springs Recreation Area sits just past the SR 19 junction and makes a natural turnaround point. Fuel up before you leave the Ormond Beach area, watch for wildlife on the forest stretch and check the recreation area’s hours and fees before you go.
