Riding the A1A South to Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach
A1A South to Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach: a 30-mile coastal ride from Main Street at A1A, Daytona Beach to Flagler Avenue, New Smyrna Beach. Plan on about 1 hr 5 min of riding, plus stops.
Head south from Main Street on A1A, which runs as Atlantic Avenue through Daytona Beach Shores with the ocean on your left. Keep going into Ponce Inlet and follow South Peninsula Drive to the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse. The tower stands 175 feet tall, dates to 1887 and is a National Historic Landmark, and the chamber’s travel guide calls it the tallest lighthouse in Florida.
No road crosses the inlet, so backtrack north and cross the Halifax River on Dunlawton Avenue in Port Orange. Take US 1 south, then the North Causeway east to Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach. Speed limits stay low along the beachside, so settle in and enjoy the view.
