Riding the Wings of the West Loop (DeLand and De Leon Springs)
Wings of the West Loop (DeLand and De Leon Springs): a 60-mile backroads loop starting at Downtown DeLand. Plan on about 2 hr of riding, plus stops.
This inland loop trades ocean views for small towns and wildlife refuges. The Wings of the West trail links six mural wings painted as photo backdrops, and the CVB maps it as a 60-mile loop around West Volusia. Start in downtown DeLand, where the first set of wings is on Persimmon Lane just off Woodland Boulevard, then stop at Skydive DeLand by the airport.
Ride north to the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge in De Leon Springs and the Pioneer Settlement in Barberville, then swing south to the Cassadaga fairy trail and the Lyonia Environmental Center in Deltona before closing the loop. From Daytona Beach, US 92 gets you to DeLand in roughly 25 miles.
Timing: About 2 hours with short photo stops, plus the ride over from Daytona Beach.
